any yakonin strain is the biggest dead giveaway (phenotypically) that someone is japanese and not some other type of east asian. it is exclusive to japan and very distinct, probably the result of intentional phenotype selection by aristocracy. the japanese royal family (widely considered "ugly") is all heavily yakonin with those big ol' hook noses. it looks better when mixed into other types so you just get a slight but distinctive aquiline ridge.

i think they're scared to ID foreigners or just don't ID people because they assume you're not lying or willing to break the law. or they just have no idea how older vs younger white people look. my brother bought alcohol in japan when he was like 16
