I just finished reading this. The gayest and most embarrassing thing I've seen all week. Maybe the most 2010 thing I have ever read. This piece belongs in a museum. I kept stopping to share excerpts with people. And in turn they were telling me more about Tim. I didn't know he spent two years making an awful iphone game that got a 9.5/10 from Destructoid (And Tim says that he hates social conventions that demand people be absurdly nice and deferential as a matter of course). There's so much going on in this piece. The absurdly misplaced overconfidence in western gaming. The baseless condescension towards the Japanese. The one sided loathing of social convention and convention in general (any consistent element in japanese games being bad). Everyone really did think the japanese were hopelessly retarded backward yellow monkey people in 2010. Imagine writing this now. Of course more people hate Japan, but with a bit more focus. And more people love them. Some openly, and some hypocritically. How we all feel about Japan is a warzone issue now. And this piece is hopelessly outdated for all sides. I would say it was outdated even when it was written, it was just too high on its own garbage supply. Like all products of the Obama Era. Yes. An insecure person who copes with strategic displays of performative insecurity. Unless when talking about how much he hates himself he also regularly mentions contempt for his audience this is lies too. He knows he's smarter than the spic children watching 9 hour youtube videos. He knows what he's doing. He knows how this looks. He's human you know. It's insecurity. This is a human fault (not really), which draws attention away from his actual wrongs and flaws (complacent status-seeking within a political culture which is toxic to art and culture and humanity). Not as much as he hates you. He's not transparent at all. Everyone's buying that this is a more or less spontaneous and authentic expression just because of all the warts and all disgustingness which people assume must mean he's being frank. Explain what that means without using the word "narcissism". If it means something to you that's something. From there profundity is more a matter of who's having the experience. Brilliant people have fascinating life experiences and beautiful inner worlds even if they live in miserable uncultured shitholes and have lives of mostly suffering. That is not Tim Rogers.
