that being said if a piece of recorded music is before the mid-60s it almost definitely sucks because almost all of the features of popular music from before the garage band explosion are largely unappealing to me* and i really dislike the flat, tinny sound that most recordings had even up to the early 70s. i've actually heard some surf and jazz recordings from the 40s and 50s that had VERY clear and crisp sound quality that captured a lot detailthere was one particular 60s surf record that shocked me because i didn't think that recording quality was even possible back then, and it makes me wonder why almost nothing sounded like that if the technology was readily available for a middling in popularity, regular surf group. why does that album sound so good when you have absolute dookie production the beatles' own state of the art studios? why do beach boys records still "sound" old into the 70s? why do motown recordings and elvis recordings sound like they're recorded with mics made out of porcelain?*the exceptions are some classical, traditional and avant-garde music
