Everything Is Getting Worse
As time goes on, people who feel indifferent to politics will increasingly be affected by political problems.
Eventually a large percentage of the population which is apathetic today, including among the cognitive elite, will support any movement that proposes pragmatic solutions.
People can only afford to be apathetic about politics when they can live predictable, stable lives. But they will be seeking relief as society continues to break down and a new “stasis” is established.
The people who are already here and the systems already in place can’t sustain a society with the level of efficiency and complexity that has existed in the past, that’s why everything is beginning to fail. Eventually there will be a completely nightmarish and senseless “new normal” like in Mexico, Africa, or South Asia, and the people who are used to how things are now won’t like it.
You can see this already when stores like Walgreens started putting more expensive products behind locked glass cases, or how two of the major airlines had to ground all flights this year because their software was outdated, or how every new Star Wars show sucks. Everything is getting worse.
On some level the particular content of political speech matters less, in its simplest form its reducible to “for” and “against.” That’s actually the origin of the political right and left. Like in 2016, we need large numbers of people to see political opposition as viable and necessary.
