After three weeks of cutting off all power, food, water and energy to the over two million civilians in Gaza, blocking most aid convoys and bombing the hell out of the strip from the sky, Israel finally launched their first significant “ground incursion” on Friday night.

“A senior Israeli official told Axios the IDF incursion that began on Friday is mostly taking place in the northern Gaza Strip,” Axios reports. “The official added that it is much bigger and more significant than the limited raids that have taken place in recent days.”

From Reuters, “Hamas vows ‘full force’ after Israel steps up Gaza ground operations”:

JERUSALEM, Oct 28 (Reuters) – Hamas said on Saturday its militants in Gaza were ready to confront Israeli attacks with “full force” after Israel’s military widened its air and ground attacks on the Palestinian enclave.

The Palestinian militant group that rules Gaza said earlier its fighters were clashing with Israeli troops in areas near the border with Israel after Israel reported intensified attacks in Gaza.

“In addition to the attacks carried out in the last few days, ground forces are expanding their operations tonight,” Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a televised news briefing on Friday evening, raising the question of whether a long-anticipated ground invasion of Gaza may be beginning.

He said Israel’s air force was conducting extensive strikes on tunnels dug by Hamas and other infrastructure.

The armed wing of Hamas said late on Friday its fighters were clashing with Israeli troops in Gaza’s northeastern town of Beit Hanoun and in the central area of Al-Bureij.

“The Al-Qassam brigades and all the Palestinian resistance forces are completely ready to confront (Israel’s) aggression with full force and frustrate its incursions,” Hamas said in a statement early on Saturday.

“Netanyahu and his defeated army will not be able to achieve any military victory,” referring to the Israeli prime minister.

There’s no word yet on how the invasion is going.

UPDATE: Hamas is claiming they repelled the incursion using (Russian) Kornet missiles in addition to their own Yassin missiles.

Hamas spokesperson Ali Bakara released the following statement on Friday night:

Bleeding for the people of the Arab nation.

The failure of the ground attack launched by the occupation forces on the Gaza Strip through three fronts, and there are heavy losses among the enemy’s ranks in terms of soldiers and equipment.

The enemy fell into ambushes prepared by the Palestinian resistance on a number of fronts, and since the beginning of the battle there have been defensive plans against any attempt.

Kornet missiles and Yassin missiles were used to repel the attack, and we expect the enemy to try again.

The Israeli occupation used helicopters to evacuate the wounded and dead from the battlefield.

This is allegedly video of a Kornet being used (take all these reports with a large grain of salt):

If this is true, you can be damn sure Likud’s Amir Weitmann is going to throw another fit!
