Confusion Over the Border – What’s Really Going On?

Allan Wall

Anyone who’s been following media accounts of the U.S.-Mexico border over the past few weeks can be forgiven for being confused. Indeed, reports on the state of the border have been downright contradictory.

Let’s dredge through the international migration swamp and see what’s really going on.

  • IS THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION BUILDING A WALL?

Yes, the administration announced it was going to do some wall building. But don’t get too excited. For one thing, the amount of wall to be built is only about 20 miles.

On October 5, Homeland Security [sic] Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced in Mexico City (where else?), “There is no new administration policy with respect to the border wall. From day one, this administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer.”

Plus, remember the Biden administration has been herding as many illegal aliens through the border “legally” by using and abusing such policies as asylum and parole, utilizing the CBP One app to make appointments to enter, setting up processing facilities in Latin America, and flying people directly to the United States.

At this rate, it eventually will not matter if the border is “secure” or not. Everybody in the world will be “legalized” to enter at regular crossing stations!

  • WHAT ABOUT THE ANNOUNCED DEPORTATIONS TO VENEZUELA?

As of late, Venezuelans have been entering the U.S. in droves. About 50,000 crossed the U.S. border illegally in September alone.

On September 20, “Temporary” Protected Status (TPS) for any Venezuelans who entered on or before July 31, 2023, was extended for 18 months.

What Venezuelans can be deported?

Any Venezuelan not covered by TPS, parole, asylum or any other program, and who is actually in physical custody, might possibly be deported.

Really? That’s it?

  • IS MEXICO HELPING US SECURE THE BORDER?

The media said Mexico is helping us secure the border. OK, sure, Mexico is doing some things.

But remember, Mexico made this deal with the Biden administration, which is dedicated to bringing in hordes of foreigners.

Check out this recent Daily Mail headline: Mexico is HELPING migrants get nearer to America and charging $85 for a bus ticket from Oaxaca in the south to Mexico City.

Not only are they moving migrants closer to the U.S. border, they’re making money off of them!

You have to admire Mexican entrepreneurial skills. Mexicans can make a peso off anything.

  • ARE DEMOCRATS TURNING AGAINST OPEN BORDERS?

Doubtless many grassroots Democrats don’t want mass migration, especially when it means an invasion of their own city.

It’s entertaining to see northern Democrats crying about their “sanctuary” states and cities getting invaded by illegals.

It’s perfectly fine, you see, for illegal aliens to flood into Texas cities. But swarming Chicago or the Big Apple, that’s just unseemly.

On October 1, New York Governor Kathy Hochul had this to say about the border: “It is too open right now… We want [Congress] to have a limit on who can come across the border.”

What a novel concept, Governor Hochul. You might discuss it with national Democratic leaders.

How about the pathetic spectacle of New York City Mayor Eric Adams visiting Mexico, Ecuador and Colombia? For what, exactly?

Mayor Adams said New York City was full but also said he was in Latin America to learn. The mayor wound up his four-day trip on October 7, on Colombian soil, calling on the U.S. government to let migrants work in the United States legally.

Make up your mind, Mr. Mayor.

  • IS THE MIGRANT FLOW SLOWING?

As long as people keep getting in, others keep setting out. That’s the “root cause” of migration.

On October 2, Mexican Presidente Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (known by the initials AMLO) said that 6,000 migrants enter Mexico daily. Where do you suppose they’re headed?

What about the dangerous Darien Jungle between Colombia and Panama, where so many migrants pass through?

It’s now become a multi-million dollar business with trails marked by colored ribbons and guides and porters. Crossing time is now down to just two and a half days.

Once again, you’re got to admire those Latin American entrepreneurial skills!
