Gamer III – ALBUM REVIEW

Hey everyone. Whithany Knightano here, Internet’s swagiest music nerd. And it’s time for a review. Of the new Negative Xp album, Gamer III.

If you’re reading this you’re probably already familiar with Negative Xp also known as Shooter. Starting out in 2016 under the name School Shooter, multiple different projects were released under this moniker. This artist really blew up circa 2019 with the song Scott Pilgrim vs the world ruined a whole generation of women. This song garnered millions of streams and influenced a whole generation of soundcloud musicians to be themselves. On this 4/20 he gives us the newest installment and final addition to the Gamer trilogy. The themes of each album in the trilogy are:

Gamer = self-hate

Self-reflection = Gamer 2

Self-righteousness = Gamer 3

First things first, this is nothing like previous projects. If you’re looking for stuff like Gamer and Varsity you might be disappointed. This has more of a 70s dark metal vibe. The album’s main theme is medieval a reference to rpg games of the 90s.

I like the change a lot. He really experiments with the instrumentation in ways not introduced in previous installments. The vocalization feels more hostile and aggressive here.

Torpor is a light acoustic track. A nice listen to sway us into the album before us. Bad guy and Shield & Sword are epic soundscapes reminiscent of Saturday morning fantasy cartoon openings.

Play, cursed object, and … are all instrumentals that add to the atmosphere of the album. Play and … are piano tracks that sound ripped out of an NES cartridge while Play feels like your waking down a castle corridor.

Barbaric Weapon and Schloss were moments when the metal aspect really go all in and are tracks that I feel fall flat.

I like this a lot more than Gamer 2. There’s parts of it that lull on but I do feel like this my grow on people over time.

Either way if you are a new comer or a long time fan it’s definitely worth a listen. Would recommend to go into it with an open mind.
