Tens of thousands of Palestinians fled northern Gaza for a second day ahead of an evacuation deadline, as Israel extended an aerial bombardment and carried out limited raids into the enclave to search for hostages seized a week ago by Hamas fighters.Israel has ordered 1.1mn Palestinian civilians to leave the northern part of the 40km Gaza Strip ahead of an expected full-scale ground invasion against Hamas, the militant group that staged a cross-border attack last Saturday.
Israel is not going to allow all of these people to leave. The border is still largely closed. If the backlash had not have been so severe, they would’ve already killed them all. It feels like Israel didn’t expect such a harsh response and expected the world to cheer on their retaliation. Now they’re forced to act like they’re giving them time to escape while they plan their next move.
