With its many layers of political, religious, historical, and perhaps even racial symbolism, it’s difficult to even describe what the series is about. It’s easy to forget that the original film opens up in a bizarre science lab involving experimentation on chimps. A chimp is strapped down to a bed in front of several TV screens all depicting scenes of mayhem, political violence, and crime across the world. They’re infected with “rage,” the scientist says ominously before total hell breaks loose.

The series is written by the incredible sci-fi writer and filmmaker Alex Garland. His show and films like Devs, Ex Machina, and Annihilation brilliantly explore topics like determinism, consciousness, and materialism. His horror movie Men explores generational trauma—particularly cycles of male violence. In 28 Days Later this theme takes on a more historical and political dimension. England has collapsed and regressed into barbarism. Our main characters—a man and two women—are saved by a group of all male soldiers. The leader of the soldiers is a realist and argues that the rules of the old world must return if they are to survive. The men need a reason to live and the women must serve their role. The film doesn’t quite moralize about the soldiers. Morale is genuinely low and the men need a reason to risk their lives in battle.

28 Weeks Later and 28 Years Later are much more overtly political. Weeks, from 2007, was a direct commentary on the Iraq war. In Years, we take a deep look into the psychological history of English political violence. In the infamous “Boots” scene, we are given a historical homage of generations of young English men being raised to work and kill in an endless cycle of war. When Spike comes of age, his village resoundingly expresses gratitude and praise for his sacrifice as a soldier being lavished with feasts and legends. His father demands that he learns how to kill.

The infected are infected with rage. They are the disempowered violent masses who have been activated by political revolution. In Weeks, the US Army is sent to manage a community of survivors—only to be put in a position where they have to gun everyone down to contain the infection. Again—the film doesn’t moralize about this. It’s very realistic about the situation. The rage spreads through their community in a way that is beyond their control, and the soldiers must kill everyone for the sake of containment. Even the smallest act of humanity leads to a spread of the infection to continental Europe at the end of the film.

The inevitability of the spread and moral compromise of the survivors is prominent throughout the series. Any time a woman stops to save a child, it leads to people getting killed. People have to constantly leave the weak behind (including family members) to save themselves. In Years, we meet Jimmy, who becomes a Satanist after the trauma of watching his family get butchered. He interprets the infection as Satan punishing the world and commits acts of barbaric sadism in honor of him. He recruits young child soldiers for his cult by making them commit sadistic acts and traumatizing them.

In the newest film 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Jimmy’s Satanism comes into conflict with the Atheism of Dr. Ian Kelson— the builder of the bone temple. The doctor built the temple as a monument to all of the dead. Memento Mori—remember you must die. In the previous film, the doctor, literally immersed in a world of death and gore, demands that the young protagonist take on a higher, scientific, fatalistic view of the cycle of life and death. He accepts a peaceful assisted suicide of his mother and places her skull at the top of the temple facing the sunrise. During this emotional scene we see a Milky Way spiral of light emitting from the center of the temple.

The doctor sees humanity in the savage infected and tries to cure an “Alpha” who he names Samson. The cure involves a process of dulling the nerves with morphine and emotional rehabilitation—but the final piece was an antipsychotic drug. The doctor concluded that the infected were seeing something in the face of the non-infected that wasn’t really there—a face of predation and terror. The solution to the rage was to overcome this hallucination—thus ending the wrathful reaction. At one point he says, “I’m the NHS.” He is democratic socialism and modern science trying to cure the wrath of the politically disempowered and traumatized.

Jimmy insists on maintaining his metaphysical worldview and wants to affirm the Satanic voices in his head. He wants to continue the cycle of violence by increasing his blonde warband devoted to violence and sadism. He and his minions are fingers of the hand of Satan. Spike doesn’t like the world of violence and is more of an individual in a quest for truth and a world outside political violence.

In the first Years film, Spike meets a Swedish soldier who calls himself a Viking. He tells Spike that the term “Alpha” makes him think of Wall Street stockbrokers and he preferred the Norse term bärsärk or berserker— a “crazy fucking Viking warrior.” “A fierce warrior high on blood.” Soldiers who become stronger and mad with bloodlust in the midst of killing in battle. This term was used to describe the Viking invaders of England throughout the early medieval period.

pic.twitter.com/nlAwpQ1hQx

— wpp🎭🔨 (@skycaptaingroyp) January 16, 2026

This cycle of Viking rage is illustrated in Weeks when an outbreak of the infection leads to a completely unhinged orgy of violence as US soldiers mercilessly gun everyone down. Jimmy allows his minions to indulge in this Berserk state when attacking the infected and non-infected. Heavy metal music accompanies their slaughter. At the conclusion of The Bone Temple, the doctor orchestrates a Satanic heavy metal ritual that is extremely cathartic for the Jimmy gang—much like how modern heavy metal Satanism offers an outlet for lingering aggressive barbaric instincts. When the young girl asks the doctor if he’s Satan he says no, “it’s just us.” It’s just the devil in all of us. Science deflates the spirit of gravity.

Samson, the infected Alpha, must overcome his primitive instincts in order to be cured. Samson in the Bible loses his strength when he succumbs to his lusts but eventually tears down the Pagan temple by obeying God. In the film, Samson’s great act is in a mental, scientific overcoming—not a physical or supernatural one. He doesn’t destroy the temple. By being able to accept death he is overcoming the reactive rage that infected him. Perhaps Samson symbolizes an alpha disempowered person—like a Jewish or Anglo stockbroker waging war against the world. These types of people—the raging deracinated mob—killed Jimmy’s white middle class family and caused him to become a Satanic Nazi. Both Samson and Spike represent Jewish or Anglo alternative paths to the cycle of political violence.

Jimmy sees the world like the Teletubbies—watching themselves on a screen on their stomach, who are also watching themselves on a screen on their stomach ad infinitum. He’s playing the role humans have always played. His gang wear masks that make them look like serial killers, similar to the mysterious masks worn by some of the villagers in the first film. The infected hallucinate the faces of predators while the non-infected wear faces to appear like predators.

The Bone Temple ends with a very explicit commentary about the cycle of political violence, even pointing out that the rise of Hitler and the Holocaust were the result of injustices from the Treaty of Versailles. Dr. Kelson becomes the embodiment of the scientific temperament necessary to find something redemptive and progressive in the great history of human death. He laments the decline of the simple and good system that kept civilization grounded.

In the end, Dr. Kelson becomes an artist. His tireless and isolated work on his life task and his disciplined scientific seriousness allowed him to be the necessary link between everything that came before him and everything that will come after him.
