They argue that its failure culminated in the rise of\u00a0<a title=\"Fascism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fascism\">fascism<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Stalinism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stalinism\">Stalinism<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"Culture industry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Culture_industry\">culture industry<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Mass society\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mass_society\">mass<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Consumer capitalism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Consumer_capitalism\">consumer capitalism<\/a>. Rather than liberating humanity as the Enlightenment had promised, they argue it had resulted in the opposite: in\u00a0<a title=\"Totalitarianism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Totalitarianism\">totalitarianism<\/a>, and new forms of barbarism and social domination.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a
