V for Vendetta<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a British\u00a0graphic novel<\/a>\u00a0written by\u00a0Alan Moore<\/a>\u00a0and illustrated by\u00a0David Lloyd<\/a>\u00a0(with additional art by\u00a0Tony Weare<\/a>). Initially published between 1982 and 1985 in black and white as an ongoing\u00a0serial<\/a>\u00a0in the British\u00a0anthology<\/a>\u00a0Warrior<\/a><\/i>, its serialization was completed in 1988\u201389 in a ten-issue colour limited series published by\u00a0DC Comics<\/a>\u00a0in the United States. Subsequent\u00a0collected editions<\/a>\u00a0were typically published under DC’s specialized imprint,\u00a0Vertigo<\/a>, until that label was shut down in 2018. Since then it has been transferred to\u00a0DC Black Label<\/a>. The story depicts a\u00a0dystopian<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0post-apocalyptic<\/a>\u00a0near-future history<\/a>\u00a0version of the United Kingdom in the 1990s, preceded by a\u00a0nuclear war<\/a>\u00a0in the 1980s that devastated most of the rest of the world. The\u00a0Nordic supremacist<\/a>,[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0neo-fascist<\/a>,[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0outwardly\u00a0Christofascistic<\/a>, and\u00a0homophobic<\/a>\u00a0fictional\u00a0Norsefire<\/a><\/i>\u00a0political party has exterminated its opponents in\u00a0concentration camps<\/a>, and now rules the country as a\u00a0police state<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0comics<\/a>\u00a0follow the story’s title character and protagonist,\u00a0V<\/a>, an\u00a0anarchist<\/a>\u00a0revolutionary<\/a>\u00a0dressed in a\u00a0Guy Fawkes mask<\/a>, as he begins an elaborate and theatrical\u00a0revolutionist campaign<\/a>\u00a0to kill his former captors, bring down the\u00a0fascist<\/a>\u00a0state, and convince the people to abandon fascism in favour of\u00a0anarchy<\/a>, while inspiring a young woman,\u00a0Evey Hammond<\/a>, to be his prot\u00e9g\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

DC Comics sold more than 500,000 copies of the graphic novel in the United States by 2006.[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Warner Bros.<\/a>\u00a0released\u00a0a film adaptation of the same name<\/a>, written and co-produced by\u00a0the Wachowskis<\/a>,[a]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0in 2005. Following the\u00a0first<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0second season<\/a>\u00a0premieres<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Gotham<\/a><\/i>\u00a0prequel<\/a>\u00a0television series<\/a>\u00a0Pennyworth<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in 2019 and 2020,\u00a0showrunners<\/a>\u00a0Danny Cannon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Bruno Heller<\/a>\u00a0confirmed the series would also serve as a prequel to\u00a0V for Vendetta<\/i>,[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0with the series’\u00a0British Civil War<\/a>\u00a0eventually giving way to the\u00a0Norsefire<\/a>\u00a0government and rise of V,[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup>[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and the\u00a0third season<\/a>\u00a0featuring predecessors to V wearing\u00a0Guy Fawkes masks<\/a>.[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
