It features two intertwined storylines\u2014one tells the story of a hitman wishing to leave the criminal underworld (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leon_Lai\">Leon Lai<\/a>), the prostitute he starts a relationship with (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karen_Mok\">Karen Mok<\/a>), and his agent, who is infatuated with him (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michelle_Reis\">Michelle Reis<\/a>). The other story is of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muteness\">mute<\/a>&nbsp;ex-convict on the run from the police (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Takeshi_Kaneshiro\">Takeshi Kaneshiro<\/a>) and a mentally unstable woman dumped by her boyfriend (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charlie_Yeung\">Charlie Yeung<\/a>). Set in 1995 pre-Handover&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Hong_Kong\">Hong Kong<\/a>,&nbsp;<em>Fallen Angels<\/em>&nbsp;explores the characters&#8217; loneliness, their alienation from the situations around them, and yearning for connections in a hectic city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wong initially wrote&nbsp;<em>Fallen Angels<\/em>&nbsp;as the third story of his preceding film,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chungking_Express\">Chungking Express<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;(1994), but split them into two separate movies due to their cumulative length. Similar to&nbsp;<em>Chungking Express<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Fallen Angels<\/em>&nbsp;features a fragmented narrative that emphasises mood and atmosphere over structure. Whereas its predecessor incorporates bright daytime colours,&nbsp;<em>Fallen Angels<\/em>&nbsp;consists of scenes exclusively shot at night and using darker colours alongside bright neons. Wong considered the two movies to be complementary counterparts exploring contemporary Hong Kong. Cinematographer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christopher_Doyle\">Christopher Doyle<\/a>&nbsp;extensively used&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wide-angle_lens\">wide-angle lens<\/a>&nbsp;to distort the characters&#8217; faces on the screen, conveying their isolation from the surrounding world. Doyle also creates distorted tension in scenes of extreme violence with frantic, out-of-focus visuals. The soundtrack extensively uses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trip_hop\">trip hop<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pop_music\">pop<\/a>&nbsp;songs to convey mood and maintain an &#8220;urban environment&#8221; that plays with popular culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Fallen Angels<\/em>&nbsp;was released in September 1995. Upon release,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Film_critics\">film critics<\/a>&nbsp;commented that its styles resembled those deployed in&nbsp;<em>Chungking Express<\/em>; many lamented that Wong had become self-indulgent, though as time went on critics began to be more appreciative of the film. At the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/15th_Hong_Kong_Film_Awards\">15th Hong Kong Film Awards<\/a>&nbsp;in 1996, it won three awards: Best Supporting Actress for Mok, Best Cinematography for Doyle, and Best Original Score for Roel A. Garcia and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frankie_Chan\">Frankie Chan<\/a>. Retrospectively, critics commented that though&nbsp;<em>Fallen Angels<\/em>&nbsp;was not as groundbreaking as its predecessor, it remained one of Wong&#8217;s most captivating films, cementing his trademark styles. The film&#8217;s abstract, unconventional style, the context in which it was made, and its use of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pastiche\">pastiche<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intertextuality\">intertextuality<\/a>&nbsp;with regards to both popular culture and its predecessor&nbsp;<em>Chungking Express<\/em>&nbsp;have led to the movie being described as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Postmodernist_film\">postmodern film<\/a>&nbsp;and as suggesting a postmodern reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movie has since its release encompassed a large cult following, and is also the last film Wong fully shot in his native Hong Kong before embarking on more ambitious international productions.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fallen_Angels_(1995_film)#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fallen Angels&nbsp;is a 1995&nbsp;Hong Kong&nbsp;neo-noir&nbsp;crime&nbsp;comedy-drama&nbsp;film[3][4]&nbsp;written and directed by&nbsp;Wong Kar-wai.
