It is also considered a pioneer of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metroidvania\">Metroidvania<\/a>&nbsp;genre alongside&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Super_Metroid\">Super Metroid<\/a><\/em>, inspiring numerous exploration-based&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Action-adventure_game\">action-adventure games<\/a>, and would have a lasting impact on the&nbsp;<em>Castlevania<\/em>&nbsp;series, with subsequent mainline entries adopting its gameplay model. However, sales upon released were extremely low, until it eventually graduated from word-to-mouth, becoming a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sleeper_hit\">sleeper hit<\/a>, where it sold over 900,000 units in the United States and Japan.
