Writing this as I listen. I'm already on the third song, and I love the riffs. Very catchy, the lo-fi sound is great. The first two were pretty great but I wish they were longer. This is my second listen and it sounds better than the first time. The songs being short isn't necessarily a bad thing always btw, a lot of music in this genre suffers from being TOO long very often, so this is actually refreshing, it's jsut some ideas feel incomplete. TEMPTATION CREEPS TO YOU LIKE RAPISTS IN THE NIGHT. Game of Pricks has this twee sound to it that I've always really loved. Reminds me of some of the good Alvvays songs. Maybe I'm also a little love-drunk and this sort of sound gets to me more than usual. I looked at twitter for a few songs, these last few ones weren't particularly interesting. Currently at Big Chief Chinese Restaurant. Closer You Are.. feels so modern to me. Carseatheadrest-y. Actually you can say this about the whole album, not sure if this is just the genre as a whole or if Carseatheadrest aped these guys in particular. Hit is a song that should have absolutely been longer what the fuck. I replayed it like ten times. The highlight of the album so far. Things kind of blend into each other afterwards, except Striped White Jets, though it still pales to Hit. Wow we're in China now. The "asian" riff in Always Crush Me reminds me of a song that I really like from the Ween/Boredoms collab album Z-Rock Hawaii. Back to generic lo-fi rock album outro music.

3/5 This could have easily been a 3.5 or 4 if the ideas in it were actually completed instead of just fucking around and recording.

I'm actually angry enough about Hit being so short that I want to give this 2.5/5 just because. I feel cockblocked.

I'm a huge fan of Alien Lanes. Not every song is as well-developed as the highlights, but they are all at least mercifully short. Watch Me Jumpstart was far and away the best song, which I haven't seen anyone else mention. The album also has more emotional depth than I remember. Before I took another look into this album, I wasn't interested in hearing more of their discography because I thought Robert Pollard was Jewish (I'm an antisemite), but now I'll have to check it out.

i should also add that finding out guided by voices formed when they were all like 28/29 and didn't become popular until their late 30s gave me a small amount of hope that my life didn't end at age 12. and also a youtube comment on one of their songs lamenting on how gbv were the "sound of my 20s" which i thought people only did for their teenage years
