i tried to make this shorter but i couldn't because i'm bad at writing

-pornostar
film about an aimless loner who hates gangsters managing to get involved in a group of yakuza who turn out to be aimless losers, being dragged along to do very low-level work in a crappy little clubhouse. i don't know how to describe this one accurately or get across why i like it so much but it's on youtube in full

-19 year old's map
this one's a little old-people-ish in the way the film looks and sounds, but i think the dialogue and characters are good enough to stop it from being boring. teenager stuck in a crappy shanty town working minimum wage as a delivery boy becomes more far right and increasingly hating people around him, reacting increasingly strongly the more he realizes he's stuck here forever and can't do anything about it

even though i would call it far more about "social issues" (really gay term but i can't think of how else to say it) it's one of the few films i've seen about far-right people that isn't in some way patronizing or constantly telling you EXTREMISM IS BAD AND FAR RIGHT ARE BAD. it's got far more depth in it than this, i just think that'd be the most appealing part to people on this forum

-postman blues
a postman is mistaken for a drug carrier because he comes across a school friend who's now yakuza. a series of unfortunate coincidences leads to a series of unfortunate coincidences leads to a series of unfortunate coincidences.also probably the only time i've ever come even slightly close to crying from a movie. if you like this film a lot you can check out anything else the director made because his style is very specific and all of his films are slow unravellings of information but at a rapid pace with a lot of exaggerated camerawork

-964 pinocchio & rubber's lover
these 2 are by the same director and are very similar in style while also being very distinct in the way they're directed. rubber's lover is a spiritual sequel to 964 pinocchio but there's no continuing plot or anything that requires seeing them in the right order
the first one is about a lobotomised sex slave who was thrown out on the street for having erectile dysfunction and getting taken in by a paranoid schizophrenic homeless girl and the second one is about scientists illegally developing a mind-expanding superdrug that keeps killing test patients. they both gradually get more insane as the characters themselves become more delusional and obsessed

-angst
very straight forward austrian film following every step of a serial killer's journey from the moment he's released from jail, to immediately breaking into a rich family's house. narrated in an incredibly pretentious way (on purpose) by the guy as if he's talking to himself the whole time and just generally has some of the most incredible cinematography that i've ever seen

-all about lily chou chou
this one appeals to zoomer sensibilities whilst not being garbage (rare)
it's very "wow... computer.... wow... internet"

The King of Comedy (1982)

Screenshot 2024-08-07 215408.png

An aspiring comedian and total outsider kidnaps his favorite comedian and idol and takes over his show. The protagonist achieves mainstream success through cunning antisocial behavior despite being fantastically deluded. American success story

The Collector (1965)

Screenshot 2024-08-07 215704.png

A sensitive young Englishman who enjoys collecting butterflies becomes rich from sports gambling. He uses his fortune to kidnap his love interest, a young art student, and keeps her in the basement of his idyllic farmhouse, hoping that she will love him. A tragic twist on the typical Hollywood love story.

Whatever (1999)

French film about a middle-aged misanthrope. The main character lives in the dregs of the 1968 revolution that created the 'sexual marketplace', leading to a sexual underclass of people such as himself. Although the film has a happy ending, its main thrust is its themes of sexism, pessimism, the rut of modern life, and even its racist undertones. Kind of like a French version of Taxi Driver

By the way, the best available version online I know of is on Vimeo

Zodiac (2007). It has Jake Gyllenhaal in it but he does a great job of being an obsessed crime nerd.
