this actually is accurate tho -- in america strangers will compliment your clothes or point out anything unusual you have with you (like a bag), especially if they're a service worker. i guess in japanese this isn't as common.

the story about everyone clapping at the supermarket is weird and probably only happened because they were in a small town they stopped at during a road trip and were unusual tourists so they got more attention
