how does this look in a modern context? it works for old timey villages but would legalizing prostitution in america actually be a good thing? if we banned porn and everyone had to use their imagination, get a wife, or find a hooker to do i would think that would lead to giant weird sex trafficking grooming gangs

I don't think it should be legalized. It could be more of an open secret, like the Asian massage parlors. A healthy society wouldn't have such a large need for prostitutes that would justify grooming gangs for the construction of more brothels anyways.
I recall Hitler visiting the red light district of Vienna with Kubizek and it being just one street that he could quickly walk down.
