Now Reading: The Lotus and the Robot by Arthur Koestler

I've finally gotten past the first part where the author visits India. All of it can mostly be summarized as Koestler describing the insane religious
beliefs, religious and social practices, and psychology of Hindus. The only Indians he reserves respect for are Parsis, Westernized Indian elites (both in passing), and a few famous and influential people he meets, who are invariably much more flawed than their public perceptions would let on. So far, the author has not succeeded in finding a solution to Western spiritual ills (the main goal of the journey). Within the title, the "lotus" refers to India (and Hinduism) and the "robot" refers to Japan (Zen). I'm now on the leg of the journey where the author visits Japan, and the book is starting to get much more interesting.
