After the death of his wife and a student, teacher and family man Shuhei Horikawa tries his best to raise his son alone in his hometown of Nagano. This is an adaptation of a script drafted by Japanese screenwriter and director Yasujiro Ozu before he reenlisted in the military in 1937 to fight in the Second Sino-Japanese War, which would become World War II. He fought in the infantry in China for two years before being transferred to propaganda filmmaking. This film has a relatively low amount of propaganda in comparison to the other films made during this charged period in Japanese history.
