making a concerted effort to expunge all vices from your life is a necessity for spiritual advancement.
they all must be removed. it doesn't matter whether a bird is tied down with a chain or a piece of string. it will be prevented from flying nonetheless. every time things get really bad I instinctively reach for a vice. in my case it was jerking off. now that i've cut that out entirely (it's day 31 of nofap, noporn, noedging) when these bad moments hit me I have no where to turn except God. He becomes the only refuge. this is by design. God feeds us the hard bread of tribulations in order to draw us to Him.
peace is not attained by satisfying the passions, but by rejecting them. if you are tempted, turn to prayer.

whose disobedience is forgiven,

Yes, what joy for those
whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt,

When I refused to confess my sin,
my body wasted away,
