i think i might actually like him more if he was more hateful, unless his hatred was bound up with breadtuber moralizing or merely deployed to facilitate social climbing. he is a eunuch, or at least that's my read on him, and that is why i took it for granted that he is genuinely "emotionally incontinent" as you said -- as opposed to being manipulative and a grifter, which would actually be more chad, wouldn't it?
his boku no natsuyasumi video recounts times when he was bullied by specific people, including a time when a girl said something mean to him for no apparent reason in grade school. in his doom video, he talks about how he had no friends in high school and tried to sit alone at lunch, but 2 stoners sat next to him and tried to make him their friend, but he did not engage in conversation with them even after they tried to include him, instead sitting silently next to them every day while listening in to their conversations. all of these anecdotes make him sound pathetic. i think you're right that he enjoys receiving sympathy from his audience, and this means that i am playing into his hands, reacting in the way he would like me to react. i generally enjoy watching videos where people talk about how pathetic they are because of schadenfreude (this is why i browse kiwifarms and used to subscribe to Thought Slime), but very rarely does sympathy overtake schadenfreude.
the last segment of tim rogers' boku no natsuyasumi video surprised me because i found myself invested in tim rogers as a person, his childhood nostalgia and misplaced sentimentality and soy personality quirks. even though i bought into his self-conscious display of semi-relatable social abjection by becoming mesmerized by the video and taking his narrative at face value, i don't think i was necessarily deceived. he is pathetic, he is insecure, and there are some aspects to his character that i find relatable or charming. regardless of narrativizing, he really was a fat friendless kid in high school, he really is 44 years old, and he really did decide to talk about that within a 3-hour-long video about doom.
another strange factoid about tim rogers: he said that his parents don't know about his youtube channel or even that he makes videos. they think he's still a journalist.
