i don't find this relatable or admirable, but it is kind of endearing to me because of how transparent it is. hbomberguy and shaun are narcissists, but they've completely deluded themselves to the point where i cannot relate to them as people at all. i feel like tim rogers is still just some guy trying to make something out of his life, and in the absence of anything actually meaningful, grasps at straws and does the classic soylennial thing where you pretend little tiny insignificant and mundane things are actually the most meaningful things in the world, because if not that, then what? i watched As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty when i was 14 years old and thought it was the most profound thing in the world.

i'm not sure if he's lying, but tim rogers claims to have a photographic memory, and in some of his more recent videos, he recounts specific conversations from his childhood, quoting things people said to him 30 years ago. i think this is fascinating whether or not he's deluding himself, lying/embellishing, or being truthful.

i tried to watch the geller jew and he came across to me as painfully insincere, pretentious, and sappy. i'm not sure why Action Button didn't feel that way to me. maybe it's because tim rogers seems genuinely passionate about the games he reviews, or maybe it's because his videos are so sprawling and bloated that i don't think he's trying to affect the pretense of anything -- he just is that way.

I just finished reading this. The gayest and most embarrassing thing I've seen all week. Maybe the most 2010 thing I have ever read. This piece belongs in a museum. I kept stopping to share excerpts with people. And in turn they were telling me more about Tim. I didn't know he spent two years making an awful iphone game that got a 9.5/10 from Destructoid (And Tim says that he hates social conventions that demand people be absurdly nice and deferential as a matter of course).

There's so much going on in this piece. The absurdly misplaced overconfidence in western gaming. The baseless condescension towards the Japanese. The one sided loathing of social convention and convention in general (any consistent element in japanese games being bad).

Everyone really did think the japanese were hopelessly retarded backward yellow monkey people in 2010. Imagine writing this now. Of course more people hate Japan, but with a bit more focus. most of his videos don't even feel very purposeful. they don't feel well-thought-out at all, despite him often claiming to have devised a rigid structure for them in advance of creating the video. they could all easily cut down 10x on length while making the same points. i don't enjoy them because i feel like he's teaching me something or that his taste is superior to mine, but because they are autobiographical autism fits. why do i enjoy that? i'm not sure. maybe it has something to do with why i like pinkerton more than the blue album.

The resolution to this contradiction is what I keep saying. He is an emotionally constipated commissar playing the role of a bleeding heart sentimentalist.
