this is an exaggeration but i do think you're missing a lot of the *feeling* of how meaning is expressed in a particular way (especially to signify relationships and personalities and mood subtly) if you consume any japanese media through 100% translation -- either as dubbing of media, or media which was originally text-only. a lot of subtext is absolutely lost without distracting tl notes. if a VN isn't voiced, i think it would be better to read it in japanese if you can figure out how to make it display furigana.
