The balance of your posting on the show still feels like it leans somewhat negative on the whole so I am still going to have to kill you.
The thread is about what it "means" not if we feel generally positive about it. Your only answer is that it's "Anno making something" "existential and human". Very insightful. If I had to take your words for it I'd think it wasn't that deep, which is also what I said.

mad cause u lost the debate :cheer:

That is what it is about. The depth comes from the depth of Anno's character, the richness of his feelings, and the vividness of their realisation.

DEPTH is not how many rapgenius citations are needed to get all of your REFERENCES.

If Evangelion as interpreted by me is not DEEP, what is?

What is what it's about? What are you referring to? You haven't actually said anything about Evangelion other than that it's a "[cool, sleek, edgy science fiction mystery] composite that is [authentically existential and human]". WHY?

You fixated on one remark I made about the religious veneer and then glazed a bunch of things that aren't Evangelion. Maybe your experiences with Anno's work, and with other Japanese existentialist works, contextualize Eva in a way I'm not privy to. Why not describe how SPECIFICALLY instead of just listing media?

For example, I explained why I think Shinji's character arc goes nowhere, despite being presented as a commendable character transformation. I think this is an example of Anno missing the mark. I think a lot of people feel this way about the original ending of the TV series, even if they haven't put it in to words. Do you disagree?

Also, I skimmed your replies in case I missed you actually analyzing the show at all, and this:
When watching Evangelion who is actually struck by, of all things, the occasional cross?
is crazy. Angels/Apostles (Shito), the Tree of Life, Adam, Lilith, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Lance of Longinus, the literal title "New Century Gospel"... "the occasional cross" btw. Have you even seen the show? Am I getting epic trolled? Just say you've never actually watched it and I'll kneel

Shinji is an iredeemable pathetic child with mommy issues...
...and that's better than being subsumed into mush.

The Leliel episode can summarize all that is good about Neon Genesis Evangelion. Do you understand Form?

Let me put this in terms you might understand.

"What is my arc?"

Yes, lots of confused people will project when talking about Evangelion and various other things and say that it's good because it's doing a certain thing they've been told good art stuff does, like characters having ARCS, SYMBOLS MEANING THINGS, and so on. This show has such a confused reputation largely because people like it, get a sense it's really good in some kind of way that must be prestigious, and then start looking for what they've been taught are prestige markers. Plenty of popular works are weighed down by this. Silent Hill 2 is an example I use a lot. It's very simple and on the nose in everything that it's doing. Most of what's said about it is gibberish. This comes out better if we have someone trying on hand I can use as a case study.

Now as for Shinji, does he go anywhere? I think his mind moves fairly authentically in the patterns of someone who is seriously emotionally disturbed. Because of course, he is a creation of an emotionally disturbed man. I find the tv ending to Evangelion doubly compelling as an experience of this nervous messed up character breaking through to a kind of strange personal catharsis, and getting a sense that the creators, or Anno, might be to. Is it rational? Have we made some kind of tangible progress we could map to some kind of psychological theory of the mind? No. But look at everyone clapping. Look at him smiling now. Go Shinji! Go Anno! CONGRATULATIONS!

I've seen it. Not my favourite Gainax thing and it's been a while, but I've seen it. For me it's Gunbuster and Diebuster.
