he means "music you hear from radio stations called things like '80s on 8'"
or basically just "chart-topping music from the 80s"

anytime someone judges the entirety of music by its decade, like how he said "i hate 80s music" as if that's a genre, i disregard their opinions on music entirely
if you're saying something like you're weary of any post-punk albums made after the 80s, or any drum and bass after the 90s, that's different because it's a specific kind of music with specific events and shows you probably know a decent amount of what you're talking about. like with dnb it's probably because there was a huge shift in sound in the aftermath of jump up and techstep/hardstep, with post-punk it'd be because the scenes had died completely by the late 80s in both UK and US so there's a high chance it's some indie abomination or not "genuine" (i.e. just aping what was already considered old-school,) but almost nobody who talks about music by decades can go into any detail on any of this. and um

that being said if a piece of recorded music is before the mid-60s it almost definitely sucks because almost all of the features of popular music from before the garage band explosion are largely unappealing to me* and i really dislike the flat, tinny sound that most recordings had even up to the early 70s. i've actually heard some surf and jazz recordings from the 40s and 50s that had VERY clear and crisp sound quality that captured a lot detail

there was one particular 60s surf record that shocked me because i didn't think that recording quality was even possible back then, and it makes me wonder why almost nothing sounded like that if the technology was readily available for a middling in popularity, regular surf group. why does that album sound so good when you have absolute dookie production the beatles' own state of the art studios? why do beach boys records still "sound" old into the 70s? why do motown recordings and elvis recordings sound like they're recorded with mics made out of porcelain?

*the exceptions are some classical, traditional and avant-garde music

???
do you mean because they used mono instead of stereo? imagine not liking wall of sound despite being a shoegaze faggot.

i’m talking about the sound of the microphones, mixing choices have nothing to do with it

this song was recorded in 1959, and the recording quality of it is amazing compared to almost everything else recorded before the 70s. the only part that "sounds old" is the snare. the vocals sound like they're probably old, but they're too sparse and background-sounding to be sure, which makes me wonder if a big part of the reason that stuff sounded old is that they set the gain higher back then

this is was recorded in 1971, has much more going on, uses many sounds that did not exist when comanche was made, but it SOUNDS much older because of the sound quality of it all. everything has a sort of grainy sound to it like the aural equivalent of all the lines and dots that flash up on screen when you watch older films

there are some songs like all i wanna do and del shannon's runaway where i think the only reason you can immediately tell what era it was recorded in is the general recording quality. the saxophone in runaway is a bit of a giveaway too, but you know what i mean. shut up
