if you're talking about 1 discrete, specific event or stretch of time in the past -- which is not and was not recurrent -- you're supposed to refer to it by saying "when," not "whenever"

*unless you're trying to express that you don't remember when the event happened

For example in his The Serial Killer Iceberg Explained he says Ed Kemper killed his grandma and that whenever his grandpa came home he killed him too. This implies he kills his grandpa any time he comes home like Ed Kemper is stuck in a loop, rather than when his grandpa came home after the murder of his grandma he killed him.
