I wish I could become invested enough to play a game like this. I wonder if it requires a lot of specific knowledge before
playing, or if there's a lot of reading that comes with the game.

I feel I should attempt to get into Victoria 3. I saw BookCat made some interesting posts about simulating protectionist trade strategies in the game and how in-depth the strategic planning can go. If I ever play a video game, it's usually Victoria II, which has an infamously broken world economic system and is mainly a map-painting game. The sequel seems to have a properly 'grand strategy' play style.
